How To Prevent Stretch Marks

Do Stretch Marks Have to be the Portion of Every Pregnant Woman?

Pregnancy is a beautiful and transformative time—but let’s talk real: stretch marks are a very common part of the journey and many of us are scared of them. As our bellies, breasts, hips, and thighs expand to accommodate new life, the skin stretches, and small tears in the dermis may appear as red, purple, or brown lines. While stretch marks are totally normal (and even a badge of honor!), there are things African women can do to reduce their appearance and keep skin smooth and glowing.

In this blog we look at why stretch marks happen and Valentine Njoroge, our founder, shares what she did to remain stretch mark free.

Why Do Stretch Marks Happen?

Stretch marks form when the skin stretches, or shrinks, too quickly and the collagen and elastin fibers beneath the surface break. During pregnancy, hormonal shifts (especially increased cortisol) can make your skin less elastic and more prone to tearing. Melanin-rich skin may develop darker or more visible marks, especially around the belly, hips, breasts, and buttocks. Stretch marks are a form of scarring so they may fade and become less noticeable with time, but they do not disappear completely.  This is a case where prevention is definitely better than cure.

5 Yummy Ways to Prevent Stretch Marks Naturally

1. Start Moisturizing Early

The best time to start your stretch mark prevention routine is as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. Consistent hydration keeps skin elastic and resilient.

Try: You can create your own blend of Baobab, black seed & avocado oils — try a 2:1:2 ratio! These oils are rich in vitamins A, D, and E, and omega fatty acids. They will promote collagen production which is great for elasticity and firmness. These oils are also anti-inflammatory, softening and easily absorbed.

2. Feed Your Skin from the Inside

Our founder used to make a smoothie with Sukuma (kale), spinach, cucumber and lime. She would also drink bone broth a few times a week and lots of water. Eat foods rich in zinc, vitamin C, protein, and omega-3s to support collagen production.

Hydration is also key — drink water like it’s your job.

3. Gentle Exfoliation

Use a soft exfoliant once or twice a week to remove dead skin and allow oils to penetrate more deeply. Avoid harsh scrubs during pregnancy.

Try: Mixing a little sugar with your Yummy Beauty Hydrating Cleanser for a bump-safe DIY scrub.

4. Massage Daily

Massaging your belly, hips, and breasts with nourishing oil stimulates blood flow and supports skin elasticity. It’s also a beautiful bonding ritual with your growing baby.  You can use the opportunity to pray over your baby, or ask your partner to do the massaging 😉

5. Stay Consistent

Preventing stretch marks is all about consistency. Apply your oil blend twice a day, especially after showers when skin is still damp.
