Breastfeeding And Your Hair

Breastfeeding and Your Hair: What Every Mama Should Know

Breastfeeding is a beautiful bonding journey — but for many women, especially Black women, it can come with unexpected hair drama. If you’re noticing more strands in the shower or your edges thinning after birth, you’re not alone. Postpartum hair changes are real — and here’s why they happen, and what you can do about them.

Why Hair Falls Out After Birth

During pregnancy, rising estrogen levels keep your hair in a “growth” phase longer, giving you that thick, full mane we all love. But once baby arrives, estrogen levels drop, and all that hair that stayed put? It starts shedding — fast. This process, called telogen effluvium, usually kicks in about 2–4 months postpartum and can last up to a year.

Is Breastfeeding to Blame?

Not directly. Breastfeeding doesn’t cause hair loss — hormones do. But because breastfeeding extends the low-estrogen phase, some moms experience shedding for longer. Your body is prioritizing milk production and healing, so hair takes a back seat temporarily.

Postpartum Hair Loss and Black Women

For Black women, the texture, porosity, and styling choices (braids, weaves, heat) can make postpartum hair changes feel more intense. Edges and temples are particularly vulnerable, especially if you’re already dealing with traction alopecia or have a history of scalp sensitivity.

What You Can Do

Keep your scalp nourished – Try massaging it with lightweight oils like black seed oil or baobab oil to stimulate circulation.
Avoid tight styles – Protect your edges with loose braids or gentle twists.
Hydrate from within – Drink plenty of water and eat iron- and protein-rich foods to support healthy hair growth.
Simplify your routine – Stick to gentle, sulfate-free products that cleanse without stripping.

Patience and Self-Love

The good news? For most women, postpartum hair loss is temporary. Your hair will grow back — possibly even stronger. At Yummy Beauty, we’re committed to celebrating this beautiful, messy, magical season of life. Because every mama deserves to glow — hair and all.
